Maltese Falcon Locales

If you happen to visit San Francisco, you can see some of the places mentioned in The Maltese Falcon. In most cases, Hammett changed the names of the hotels, and of course, since Sam Spade was a fictional character, you won't see his name on an office door or apartment mail box.

If you intend seeing all these places, set aside 2-3 hours to do so, and go by foot. Except for the Coronet, Spade's Apartment, and the Pickwick Stage Terminal, all the locations are within a 10-15 minute walk from each other in downtown San Francisco.

Words of Advice

If you do decide to visit these places, please keep in mind that they are mostly private property or businesses. You should be respectful that these are intended to be places of business rather that tourist stops. I don't encourage you to visit the interiors of these buildings unless you actually have legitimate business there (or in the case of John's Grill, if you intend to eat there).

Additionally, you will be unable to actually enter any of the apartment complexes, such as the Coronet, nor should you try to, unless you actually know someone who lives there. Just seeing the exterior of these buildings should be enough.
