Engl 59: Application Letter -- Criteria

Questions for Evaluating an Application Letter

  1. Is the letter tailored to the job advertisement, emphasizing the most relevant details of the writer’s education, experience, and talents?
  2. Is the letter addressed to a specific person?
  3. Does the letter open by identifying its purpose, where the writer learned of the job, and what the writer’s most important qualification is for the job?
  4. Does the letter refer specifically to the company (e.g. to its products or services)?
  5. Does the letter avoid repeating details from the resume?
  6. Does the letter highlight the writer’s qualifications by citing specific work and/or educational accomplishments?
  7. Has the writer emphasized the “You Attitude,” avoiding beginning every sentence with “I”? Are the style and tone appropriate, conveying the impression that the writer is courteous, professional, and easy to work with?
  8. Are the paragraphs short and readable?
  9. Does the closing paragraph re-emphasize major qualifications, ask for an interview or phone call, and indicate the writer’s availability for an interview?
  10. Has the writer used an appropriate and consistent full-block format and page layout with all the necessary parts of the letter included? Has the writer used white space and paragraphing effectively?
  11. Is the language clear, concise, and contemporary? Has the writer proofread effectively for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors?
