AA Degree in Music - outline

Music majors must complete the core music curriculum of 38 units
(28 units required coursework plus 10 units of elective courses).

Note: The A.A. Degree in Music also requires general education courses in addition to the departmental courses listed below. Consult a counselor for additional information on general education requirements. Some graduation requirements occasionally change.

I. Core Music Curriculum (28 units total)

A. Harmony and Musicianship (16units)
Music 6A: Harmony and Musicianship (4)
Music 6B: Harmony and Musicianship (4)
Music 7A: Harmony and Musicianship (4)
Music 7B: Harmony and Musicianship (4)

B. Ensemble Performance (4 units)
All music majors are required to participate in at least one major music ensemble per semester according to individual interest. Consult with a music instructor before making a choice of ensemble.
Music 41, 48, 51, 65, 66 (1), 4 semesters.

C. Keyboard Proficiency (1 unit)
All music majors shall demonstrate by exam a basic piano keyboard proficiency as defined by the music department. Qualified students may elect to challenge the Music 29 requirement by passing the Keyboard Proficiency Exam. Consult the music faculty for further information on the keyboard proficiency requirements and the challenge process.
Music 29: Keyboard Proficiency (1)

D. Music History (6 units)
1. Music 10 (3), required
2. Any other 3-unit music history/literature course.

E. Music Degree Jury (1 unit)
Music 94: Music Degree Jury
The final product may be a recital or portfolio presentation.
Note: To be scheduled during the second year of study.

II. Electives (10 units minimum)
A. General Music Electives (10 units)
Any music courses not duplicated above.
