I keep your grades in a computer file and will circulate a printout each month so that you know the status of your overall grade. Do not wait until the end of the semester to worry about missed assignments. Missed assignments generally cannot be made up and certainly cannot be made up during the final week or two of the semester. No late papers will be accepted during finals week and the last week of the semester. To pass this course, every student must earn 70% or more of the total points AND must writing a passing level in-class essay (worthy of a grade of C or better). (There will be three in-class essays including the final exam. At least one must be of passing level.) Note: Enrollment in English 940 is highly recommended. This is a lab where you earn credit while creating or revising your essays or developing related writing skills. There are no specific required hours of attendance; you attend by arrangement. English instructors and tutors are available in the lab as are computers and assistance in using them. The lab is located in S2-201 and S2-305. Portfolio Your portfolio will reflect what you have learned throughout the semester. It is due at the final exam. In the portfolio, you need to include the following: a table of contents. a summary of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and what you have learned about your writing during the semester. three of your six essays as they were returned to you (with my corrections and notes) along with the accompanying essay evaluation form. a revised version of each of those six essays. All pieces must be word processed. Completing this assignment should be particularly helpful to you as you prepare for your final exam. I encourage you to rewrite the essays as you receive them back with a grade rather than waiting until the portfolio is due. More learning takes place if you rewrite them immediately after receiving them back from me. Late Papers One point will be subtracted from a compositions grade for each calendar day (not class day) that the paper is late. No late papers will be accepted during the final exam week and the last week of the semester. Outside Help Yes, you can get help with your papers. You and I will both be pleased as long as you learn from the help and you succeed in writing thoughtful, interesting, well-written papers throughout the semester. You dont have to learn everything from me. Learn from any source that can help you, but keep these cautions in mind. First, do NOT have someone write or overcorrect your papers. If you do not know why the corrections are made, you are not learning. If you have problems with grammar, spelling, sentence structure, get help from me or a friend or a website or the Learning Center, but LEARN from the assistance. Second, your in-class writing will reflect YOUR writing ability, and if there is a huge difference in the writing quality of in-class paper and at-home papers, I will conclude that you are getting too much outside assistance which is not actually helping you to improve your writing. In such a case, the at-home compositions will not be figured into the course grade. Plagiarism Plagiarism is using someone elses words, published or not, and pretending that you wrote them. This is cheating. It is dishonest. It is unethical. It violates the trust I expect to establish with you. Do not do it. If you plagiarize, you will lose my trust and respect. You will also receive a zero on the assignment that can not be made up. Be honest. Be ethical. Dont plagiarize. Attendance Attendance is important for your success, so it is expected and required. I take attendance at every class. Upon your sixth absence, you will be dropped from the class. Three tardies count as one absence. A tardy that is more than 30 minutes will be counted as an absence. If you miss a class . . . If you miss a class, call a class mate to find out what you missed so that you can arrive at the next class with the assignment completed. Most in-class work cannot be made up. Absence is not considered a legitimate reason for arriving unprepared for class. Disability statement Mission College makes reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. Students should notify DISC (Disability Instructional Support Center) located in S2-201 (408/855-5085) of any special needs. Expectations Be on time, work hard while you are here, ask questions when you are uncertain of something, and treat your classmates and instructor with respect. Extra Credit The San Jose Mercury often calls for essays from readers. If you submit an essay and it is published in the newspaper, or if a letter to the editor that you write is published in the newspaper, I will remove your lowest out of class essay grade and replace it with an A. Ten points of extra credit are available for attending a lecture from a visiting scholar or a live performance of a dramatic work (a play). You will need to write a one-page summary of and response to the event you attend. This is a ONE-TIME option. Final Exam Everyone must take the final. To ensure that all English teachers are applying the same standards in their classes, all students in all sections of English 108A are required to take a common departmental final which is given on a Saturday. The final exam will be holistically and anonymously graded by two English faculty members. The final exam score will account for roughly 25% of your grade. Lets work together to make this a successful and enjoyable semester for us all. !!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!<!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u !u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u!u, # Q R + X C D -.abBz#q%fw$&')*5h &%(UnknownMacintosh userX+1 BH!&=@68#%ikuw G K r w +Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03Macintosh user;Macintos HD:Temporary Items:AutoRecovery save of 1AGrnsht Macintosh user;Macintos HD:Temporary Items:AutoRecovery save of 1AGrnsht Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03Macintosh user.Macintos HD:Temporary Items:Word Work File A 3Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03Macintosh user;Macintos HD:Temporary Items:AutoRecovery save of 1AGrnsht Macintosh userHMacintos HD:Desktop Folder:Carol's Disk:English 1A cum S97:1AGrnsht F03@BB1BB5ZprP>* )*+8HKMPw$fgprst i+,0 < T \ q " # P Q R V j k * - H K N W ~ % 6 B C j ")6AB+s,.8PpqrsBjv/P@QVP:@QVQ @QVQ,WQ2WQ @Q6WQ8 @PnWQpWQWQWQWQWPWPXQ:XQ`XQfXQzXQXPXQXQXPXQXQXP: @P@ @P"YPZP[Q[Q[Q[Q\P6\Q<\Q\\Q\P\P]Q]Q]Q8^P:^Q_Q_P@PbQbQ@Q @Q_Q_QZ@Q"`Q$`Q`Q`QaQ\@Q@Q aQ@QaP@PbQbPbQbQbQlQcQXdQvdQdQdQ eQ0eQlQePfP@@QfQ fQfPfQ@PhPhQlQlQxQxPmQmQmP>mQzPDyK carol_wilson@wvmccd.cc.ca.usyK Hmailto:carol_wilson@wvmccd.cc.ca.usmQzQmPnQnQPnQVnQ\nPnnPnQnPnQoQ>oPPoQ2zPoQ@P>@P>@Q6wQD@QSummaryInformation( DocumentSummaryInformation8CompObjXObjectPool9 )(`9 )(`*B*t"t!
