Soc043 Course Basics


Overview:
Subtitled by the telecourse, Beliefs and Believers, this course is a cross-cultural and comparative exploration of the nature and function of belief structures or "worldviews". A variety of religious and secular perspectives will help you develop an understanding of what people believe, why they believe it, and how these beliefs impact society. You'll be exposed to the history and religious systems of major world traditions. Classes will personalize understanding of religion, localize knowledge and understanding of religion in our own communities, and hopefully lead you to a realization of your own "weltanschauung" or life philosophy. Course methodology offers both class and independent study options.

Course Learning Objectives:
define religion and understand religion from a sociological perspective
comprehend the role and effect that religious worldviews have on society
identify major religions/ worldviews and recognize those within our own community
know six dimensions of worldviews which provide structure for worldview analysis
describe major religions and worldviews according to the six dimensions of study
evaluate the formation, observance and practice of their own religion/worldview
develop skills of self-discipline, time management, analysis and communication
