Course Information
Course ID:MATH*003A
Course Name:ANALYTIC GEOMETRY AND CALCULUS I
Section Number:57086
Units:5
Instructor Name:Jackins
Course Type:Online

Course Description:

This is the first part of the three semester calculus sequence for math, physics and engineering majors. The student will study and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of functions, limits, continuity, differentiation and integration, maxima, minima, and other applications and the relationship between calculus and analytic geometry for polynomial and transcendental functions. Online format: The student will study concepts from the text on CD-ROM's/DVD'S and instructor materials as assigned. Students will need to keep pace with the tentative schedule, but (except for on-campus exams) may work anytime during the week to accommodate their schedules. Students are strongly encouraged to set aside at least 3 days/times during the week where they may concentrate on new material for about 2 hours at a time. Additional time will be needed for homework and review, quizzes and tests. On-campus meetings will be scheduled for in-person midterm and final exams, as well as a final review session. Students will post or e-mail concerns/questions on content. Students will also participate in a discussion board format in order to interact with other students in the class.

Those dates are tentatively scheduled (as listed in the Schedule of Classes), but day, date and room number will be posted for the class well in advance. The time will be 5-7pm for midterm, final review and final exam tentatively scheduled in MT-05 on 10/24, 12/5 and 12/7. Any change to those dates, days or rooms will be posted during the semester.

Exam Requirements and Location:

Midterm and final exam are taken on campus in MT-05. Several off-line exams will be taken on or off campus. Email me if you have questions or to confirm time and location.

Prerequisites:

Satisfactory completion of Math D (Trigonometry) and Math 1 (Pre-calculus)

Advisories:

Self-motivation and good time management skills.

Required Books & Materials:

A TEXT/DVD package is available at the bookstore (ISBN 0-618-89097-1). The package includes text, DVD’s, and a student passkey for online access to Eduspace with resources such as an e-book version of the text, videos, summaries, examples, homework problems and selected solutions. The DVD's include lectures on concepts covered in class.

Outline of Topics to be Covered:

The student completing this course will: 1. Apply topics from pre-calculus algebra and trigonometry, 2. Evaluate limits and recognize continuity, 3. Evaluate derivatives of algebraic and transcendental functions using the definition or basic rules, 4. Apply derivatives to sketching the graphs of functions and to finding extreme values in problems from subjects such as physics, or geometry, 5. Formulate and evaluate integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions using basic techniques of integration.

Notice on Disabilities:

Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Please contact DISC (Disability Instructional Support Center) in S2-201, (408.855.5085 or 408.727.9243 TTY) to coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with verifiable documentation.
