Course Description: This is the first part of the three semester calculus sequence for math, physics and engineering majors. The student will study and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of functions, limits, continuity, differentiation and integration, maxima, minima, and other applications and the relationship between calculus and analytic geometry for polynomial and transcendental functions.
Online format: The student will study concepts from the text on CD-ROM's/DVD'S and instructor materials as assigned. Students will need to keep pace with the tentative schedule, but (except for on-campus exams) may work anytime during the week to accommodate their schedules. Students are strongly encouraged to set aside at least 3 days/times during the week where they may concentrate on new material for about 2 hours at a time. Additional time will be needed for homework and review, quizzes and tests. On-campus meetings will be scheduled for in-person midterm and final exams, as well as a final review session. Students will post or e-mail concerns/questions on content. Students will also participate in a discussion board format in order to interact with other students in the class.

DVD's for lectures ISBN 0-618-25097-2
CD-ROM Larson e-solutions for calculus is the textbook on CD with additional resources such as videos, summaries, examples, homework problems and selected solutions. (This replaces the hard copy text of Calculus of a Single Variable, Early Transcendental Functions, 3rd edition ISBN 0-618-22308-8 which you are NOT required to purchase since it is the same text as that contained on the CD-ROM's.) |
Outline of Topics to be Covered: The student completing this course will:
1. Apply topics from pre-calculus algebra and trigonometry,
2. Evaluate limits and recognize continuity,
3. Evaluate derivatives of algebraic and transcendental functions using the definition or basic rules,
4. Apply derivatives to sketching the graphs of functions and to finding extreme values in problems from subjects such as physics, or geometry,
5. Formulate and evaluate integrals of algebraic and transcendental functions using basic techniques of integration.
